Insulin resistance is the state where your cells respond less well to insulin, so your body produces more of it to keep blood sugar in range. It develops quietly, often years before glucose or HbA1c drift out of the normal range.
The usual clinical proxy, HOMA-IR, needs a fasting insulin test — and most routine blood panels simply do not include it. People get their results, want to know about insulin resistance, and find they are missing the one value they need.
The TyG index was proposed to solve exactly that. It uses fasting triglycerides and fasting glucose — two values on virtually every standard panel.
