HDL is often called the "good" cholesterol. More precisely, HDL particles carry cholesterol away from tissue and back to the liver, which is why low levels have long been associated with higher cardiovascular risk in population studies.

The reference range is one of the few that differs meaningfully by sex — women naturally run higher, and a value that is perfectly normal for a man may be low for a woman.
Low HDL rarely travels alone. It very often appears together with high triglycerides and insulin resistance, which is why it is worth reading next to those markers rather than in isolation.
Commonly used thresholds are below 40 mg/dL (about 1.0 mmol/L) for men and below 50 mg/dL (about 1.3 mmol/L) for women. Above those values is generally considered within the normal range.
No, and this is a genuine change in thinking. Very high HDL — roughly above 90 mg/dL — has not shown additional benefit in studies, and some large analyses associate very high levels with worse outcomes. HDL is not a score to maximise.
Some tools compare against tight "optimal" targets rather than laboratory reference ranges, which can flag a perfectly normal value as abnormal. Always check which range is being used.
